Overall Description of the Skill Area

The competition tasks are based on the requirements and criteria of ”Excellent” (3) in the Vocational Qualification in Hairdressing and on the requirements of working life for a young employee.

Hairdressers are required to provide a wide range of services related to the treatment of hair, skin and beard. The tasks of a professional in hairdressing include hair cutting, beard treatments, hair styling, make-up, dying and perms. Cooperation, interaction skills and entrepreneurship are emphasized, too.

Moreover, a hairdresser must have skills needed in working life such as giving comprehensive style service and hair care/styling service. Hairdressers mainly operate in hair salons either as employees, independent professionals or entrepreneurs.

The competition tasks are based on the qualification requirements. The breadth of the study  modules in the qualification are emphasized in the competition tasks. The competition tasks can be utilised in a vocational skills demonstration. The competitors can also apply for recognition of non-formal learning on the basis of the certificate received in the competition.

Competence Requirements

Competence areas based on the qualification and syllabus requirements in hairstyling:

Entrepreneurship, sustainable development, occupational well-being and occupational safety are considered in Task A-D and its assessment criteria.

Task A

Themed hairdo with hair accessory for long hair on a training head

The theme of the hairdo will be revealed according to the skills rules 1.5 months before the actual final. The hairdo has to be trendy and commercial. The attachment and hairdo techniques (accessory / accessories) and the outfit must all match the theme. Moreover, the competitor applies a make-up that matches the whole. All hairdo structures and techiques are allowed. No written work plan is made but after the assessment the competitor presents and specifies how the theme is considered. The accessory/accessories are planned, made and brought to the competition site by the competitors themselves. The training head is also be dressed in the competition site. The training head available is Pivot Point Ingrid.

Competition time 3.5 h.

Task B

Men's fashionable perm treatment, cut and finish on a training head in accordance with the given model

The competitors perform a fashionable and trendy men's perm treatment. The competition task also includes a haircut, a hairtattoo and finish, but the main focus in assessment is on the       implementation of the perm treatment. The finish is carried out by tousling the curls with fingers (use of tools is forbidden).The front of the hairdo is based on the given model, but the competitors can plan themselves how the back and the sides match the front. The training head available is Pivot Point Antonio.

Task C

Trendy haircut, colour treatment, finish and make-up for a female customer

The competitors plan and perform a trendy cut, colour treatment with current methods, as well as a suitable finish and make-up to match the whole for a female customer assigned by drawing lots. The task also includes choosing home care products and presenting them to the customer.

Task D

Trendy cut, colour treatment and finish for a male customer

The competitors plan and perform a trendy cut, colour treatment with current methods, as well as a suitable finish to match the whole for a male customer assigned by drawing lots. The task also includes choosing home care products and presenting them to the customer.

Competition time 2.5 h

Assessment

The competition tasks are modular which means that they can be assessed separately on each competition day. The total points of the competition tasks is 100 pts.

The ratio of subjective and objective assessment is found in task-specific areas of assessment.

Description of carrying out the assessment

The jury consists of five members who are teachers and representatives of working life and experienced and recognized professionals in the field. Furthermore, there is the head judge who organizes and is in charge of the implementation of the assessment.

The jury together with the steering group decides on the assessment criteria.

The judges rank the competitors by giving each competitor a set of points. Both objective and sujective assessment are used in the competition. The competitors are graded and ranked according to CIS Marking System with a 100 point maximum. Each competition task performance is assessed separately.

Work stations at the competition site

Cooperation partner KPSS Finland Ltd provides all the necessary furniture and equipment. Workstations and products can be found at the competition site as well as small accessories such as hair pins, rubber bands and perm rollers. The training heads and legs needed in the competition are available at the competition site.

The competiton is held at the premises of Kauneustalo Helmi at Koulutuskeskus Salpaus with up-to-date furniture and equipment. Cooperation partner KPSS Finland Ltd provides all the necessary equipment and products. Workstations and products are available at the competition site as well as small accessories such as hair pins, rubber bands, perm rollers and other small tools. The training heads and legs needed in the competition are also available at the competition site.

The competitors are provided with:

  • A styling unit (dressing table, customer’s chair, hairdresser’s chair, small table etc)

Materials and equipment the competitors must bring along

The competitor brings along curling tongs, heated rollers, scissors, combs, brushes, make-up products and accessories. The competitor can bring his/her personal work equipment (own hairdryer+softer, straightener) The competitor must have personal work shoes and dark trousers (no jeans).
